I haven't had these very long, so I can't speak to the quality of the boots. But they feel sturdy. They're not soft leather, but I think that's exactly what I was looking for. It's simple in design, a bit plain, but has a few things that make it stand out (zipper on the outside, a bit of a heel, and goring in the back). I'm 5'3" and the boot hits the bottom of my knee. As for the wideness of the calf...it's not too much wider than a few of the wider regular-sized boots. It's pretty much exactly 16". My calves are 16" and the first time I put them on, they were a bit tight. However, since they are leather, they'll hopefully stretch with time and I'll be able to wear jeggings or skinny jeans with them. I got them in the dark natural color and they go great with black.
